Project Summary

The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), in collaboration with Insights, Dublin City University (DCU), and the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO), seeks funding for a transformative two-year project aimed at raising awareness, educating, and providing access to AI, data, and other emerging technologies for young people, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds. Aligning with Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) objectives, the project aims to stimulate public dialogue and foster interactions between data experts and the community on crucial societal topics where AI and emerging technology play a pivotal role.

A key component involves a youth consultation process on awareness and education of emerging technologies, AI, and data, guided by the national AI strategy “Here for Good” and recommendations from the National Youth Assembly on AI. Recognising the critical role of Youth Work in shaping future generations, NYCI plans to develop a continuous professional development course for youth workers, focusing on essential digital skills and competencies in emerging technologies.

Integrating AI education within the Youth Work sector encourages interdisciplinary learning and collaboration, preparing young people for diverse opportunities in an AI-driven society. In partnership with Microsoft Dream Space, NYCI will adapt their secondary school curriculum for young people in line with NYCI’s STEAM in Youth Work Framework.

NYCI also plans to partner with three youth organisations; Crosscare, Ossory Youth, and Familibase to focus on AI, data, and emerging technologies. These projects will directly engage marginalised young people who currently lack the resources and knowledge to fully engage with this technology.
