Project Summary
Education for Sustainability (EFS) is a leading non-profit organisation working to increase climate literacy and drive community-led climate action in Ireland. In response to the growing climate crisis and the lack of practical, action-based climate education, EFS empowers young people to become climate leaders within their schools and communities. Our mission aligns with Ireland’s SDG commitments and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to 2030 goals, ensuring every child in Ireland is climate literate by 2030.
CLOuD 2030 is our flagship initiative for this mission — a two-year climate literacy and STEM education programme designed specifically for young people in socio-economically disadvantaged and marginalised communities. Led by Susan Adams and the EFS team, in partnership with Maynooth University, Localise, and sustainability leaders like Change Clothes, the programme delivers an 8-week Climate Literacy Programme in 40 DEIS primary and secondary schools across Ireland.
Students participating in CLOuD 2030 will explore climate science, sustainability challenges, and climate justice issues affecting their own communities. They will conduct needs analyses, engage local stakeholders, and lead their own community climate action projects. Through this process, students gain vital skills in problem-solving, leadership, and STEM-based solutions, while breaking down barriers to participation in climate and sustainability careers.
The project culminates in a showcase event at Maynooth University, celebrating student achievements and creating pathways for scaling and replicating the programme nationally. CLOuD 2030 fosters youth leadership, community engagement, and inclusive, grassroots climate action at a time when it’s urgently needed.
