Project Summary
H2O Heroes is an award-winning environmental education initiative designed to spark curiosity, build science confidence and promote sustainability through hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning. Led by Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), the programme invites children, families, teachers and communities to explore water quality, biodiversity and climate action through the unifying message: ‘We all live in a catchment’.
Through curriculum-aligned workshops, inclusive summer camps, Family STEM Nights and community events participants of all ages are empowered to become environmental stewards. This initiative links classroom learning with real-world science using local rivers, lakes and green spaces as outdoor laboratories. Activities include biological water sampling, biodiversity investigations and game-based learning, supported by trained student volunteers and scientists from DkIT.
H2O Heroes targets communities in counties Louth, Cavan, Monaghan, Meath and Tipperary. The programme uses Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure accessibility for all learners, including neurodiverse participants. Teacher training through the ‘H2O Superheroes’ strand builds long-term capacity in schools, while a partnership with Gaisce allows young people aged 14–24 to participate as volunteers and earn their President’s Award.
With strong cross-sector collaboration and a commitment to open access resources, H2O Heroes is building a national model for engaging communities in science-based climate action, creating a lasting legacy of environmental awareness and science participation for future generations.
