Project Summary
The Technology in my Life project will engage a minimum of 50 teachers and 700 5th and 6th class DEIS primary school students in a variety of classes and workshops on the topic of the ethical use of technology in their lives. DEIS is a national programme aimed at addressing the educational needs of children from disadvantaged communities. Specifically, this includes how to use technology in an ethical manner and in accordance with the moral and ethical standards of the school, the children’s home, and society in general. The classes and workshops will be highly interactive and include co-creation sessions where students will develop their own materials for teaching and facilitating discussion on the ethical use of technology. The students will have the opportunity to showcase all materials to other students, siblings, and parents/guardians.
The programme will be designed to inform and empower students on a variety of topics including, but not limited to, the technologies primary school students should be allowed to access, the use of technology (such as voice assistants) for help with homework, using the Internet and social media for contacting friends and getting information, and identifying and dealing with cyberbullying and other forms of unethical and undesirable behaviour facilitated by technology. A variety of teacher training materials, class materials, videos and teacher manuals will be developed to support the project. All material will be made available online and will be suitable for use by the teacher either in-person or in a blended learning environment.
