Project Summary

The climate and biodiversity crisis is an increasingly important clarion call for younger generations, and there is an important role for education to reinforce this and support them to feel empowered to take informed action. The Teaching Resources for Youth-informed Biodiversity Education (TRYBE) is an initiative which seeks to engage and empower the younger generation with knowledge to understand the value of biodiversity and to address the critical challenges of biodiversity loss. TRYBE will co-design and co-create educational resources (targeting children and young people age 8-15) based on the outcomes and recommendations of the Children and Young People’s Assembly on Biodiversity Loss (CYPABL) through:

1. Reviewing current resources: an analysis of national and international innovative practices in STEM educational resources for this age cohort, and the mapping of existing resources on biodiversity
2. Co-designing research-informed resources: working with children, young people and teachers to identify their needs and increase their curiosity and engagement in biodiversity topics
3. Co-creating and piloting new resources by developing tailored outputs to meet these needs and to increase teacher confidence in this area of science
4. Disseminating and promoting outputs amongst schools, teachers, children and young people nationally
5. Evaluating, assessing outcomes and impact, and the sharing of learnings

The resources will include curriculum linked lesson plans, animations, videos, activities and worksheets promoting experiential learning – the topics, formats and medium of which will be informed by the CYPABL, the young people, and teachers working with researchers and a biodiversity communications specialist on the co-design.
