Project Summary

Maths is the M in STEM but also underpins all other disciplines and is essential in modern life. Research shows that success correlates with positive attitude. Maths Week Ireland is the annual festival promoting positive attitudes towards maths and highlighting the importance of maths in our lives. The core ethos is Maths for All.
Running annually since 2006, it is an international leader in maths engagement, with over 400,000 participants annually. It is a collaborative partnership of organisations including all the universities, with professional bodies, visitor centres, libraries, companies and education centres facilitating engagement. It is coordinated by SETU’s award winning Calmast STEM EPE centre. Events include shows, workshops, projects, competitions, taking place in city streets, prestige venues, partner centres, in-school and online.
The initiative delivers on all of the Discover Programme goals and delivers engagement opportunities across the whole island and online. Building on capacity developed delivering two festivals remotely, we will develop attractive and effective online engagement to increase access and connect schools further. This proposal has additional new special focus projects co-creating with Travellers, residents in homeless shelters, and community groups, visually impaired. Climate action will be a central theme in 2023/24 and we will also build increased awareness of maths in decision-making with debate and dialogue to increase citizen engagement and engage policy makers on evidence-based decision-making.
Maths Week partnership builds maths EPE capacity. Successive evaluations of Maths Week have shown impact in improving attitudes towards maths.
