Project Summary
The vision of the proposed project is to develop an interactive and educational exhibit using both a physical scaled model and an Augmented Reality (AR) tool based on the new Fernhill Park and Gardens, in collaboration with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (dlrcoco) and Enable, that will spark curiosity and engagement in STEM from groups currently identified as being unengaged in STEM.
The project will have a physical, scaled model of Fernhill that will be situated in Marlay Park. The physical model will represent the grounds of Fernhill Park as they currently exist, prior to any further developments on site such as the installations of renewable energy sources. Visitors to the exhibit, situated in Marlay Park (and later in dlr Libraries) will be able to interact with the model through their mobile device screens, using an AR app. AR technology will be used to superimpose developments of the grounds of Fernhill onto the model and display how anthropogenic influence and land-use change has shaped and impacted the park. It will also show how future development of the park, in terms of renewable energy production and sustainable land use will change the parks’ function and services to the public, while helping to build resilience to potential climate change scenario. The AR technology will also be used to create a visualisation of how solar panels harvest energy and energy is stored and distributed to offset the parks energy requirements and contribute to the Parks’ stated objective of becoming a net zero energy user.
