Project Summary
The Engineering NorthWest project will engage and illuminate communities in the North West on the fun, excitement, challenge and positive societal impact associated of engineering. Nationally, skill shortages in engineering threaten economic and environmental sustainability and much needs to be done to encourage many more young people to consider future careers in engineering and technology . In this context, one of the biggest challenges facing the profession is attracting more women into the profession. While engineering is the most commonly cited occupation for 15-year-old boys, it does not feature in the top ten for girls (Engineering 2020, Engineers Ireland). Nationally, only 13% of engineering graduates are women.
Engineering NorthWest involves the delivery of two annual events promoting awareness of and enthusiasm for engineering, primarily targeting young people, particularly girls, and their parents, especially those in disadvantaged social groups. An Engineering Fair, hosted during Engineers Week, aimed at younger children (primary school age), their families includes: school projects, hands-on workshops, shows and talks. Secondly, a programme of engagement for second-level students to consider third level studies and career choices in engineering by providing workshops and information at the Fair and established IT Sligo Engineering Expo.
The Engineering Expo is a showcase of third level engineering projects and industrial engineering in the region. Second level schools across the region will be encouraged to attend the Expo, with financial support in terms of transport costs on the day of the Expo provided by the project, developing awareness of engineering courses and careers available.
