Project Summary

In today’s climate of ‘fake news’ it can be difficult for teenagers to find reliable sources of information about sexual and reproductive health. Many teenagers are learning about their bodies and these health issues from their friends, film, television, and social media. It is important to acknowledge their curiosity and desire for information regarding their health and issues, and provide them with reliable information in an engaging way.

Debunking the Myths: Science Behind Our Sexual Health is a series of interactive workshops and online engagement tools to discuss sexual health with teenagers and debunk myths associated with topics around sexual health using evidence-based, scientific information. The programme, which was developed to complement the RSE curriculum, is delivered and approved by experts such as research scientists, medics and other experts is a highly interactive and participative event, which provides clear, accurate information in relation to sexual health. The event promotes open discussion and curiosity, and students are encouraged to engage with the experts. This provides a forum for young people to explore the science behind sexual health, as well as giving them the opportunity to discuss these topics in a safe environment.

The Debunking the Myths programme helps the young people to develop the health literacy skills to find, interrogate and evaluate relevant information sources; skills necessary to promote and safeguard their reproductive and sexual wellbeing through out adolescence and into adulthood.
