Project Summary
Big Life Fix is a television series that brings together some of Ireland’s leading inventors with those most in need of their expertise. Through the use of STEM they create ingenious solutions to everyday problems, transforming lives for the better. It will be broadcast on RTÉ One at a primetime slot.
Featuring a range of human interest stories, the 4-part series will be shot in observational style, with varied narratives promising compelling scientific, engineering and technological possibilities. For instance in series 1 the team devised a novel solution to preserve the voice of a young woman with Motor Neurone Disease, and built a two wheeled bike for a farmer who lost his legs in an agricultural accident. Our engineers, designers and creative technologists will help make people’s lives a bit easier, allow them to achieve something they’ve dreamed of, overcoming adversity. Although each contributor will receive a bespoke ‘fix’, the end result will resonate with a wider group. Series 2 of Big Life Fix aims to push further the reality that STEM has the power to bring about positive change in our lives. By engaging a broad and diverse audience, Big Life Fix demonstrates, in a most accessible and convenient way, that science is considerate, crucial to change for the better, and connected to the world around us.
Big Life Fix will help both Science Foundation Ireland and RTÉ achieve their shared objective of engagement with STEM, by promoting an awareness and understanding of the value of STEM to society.
