Project Summary

STEMp.inc contributes to the achievements of key objectives of the Discover call by using new ways to engage those who would not typically engage with STEM, with particular emphasis on equality and diversity. It builds awareness and confidence in science through relevant STEM experiences. It offers SED girls the opportunity to graduate with a university accredited STEM qualification, to develop a mentoring relationship with women in Industry-this is a unique way to attract girls to STEM. STEMp.inc places particular emphasis on SED girls-they have the lowest representation in STEM courses/careers, and lowest STEM capital nationally (OECD, 2019).

STEMp.inc also aligns with national strategy for work, education and societal growth and core talent development/retention and gender balance targets of the strategy for 2025. It directly addresses the ‘digital transformation’ agenda in Irelands Impact 2030 (Ireland’s new R&D Strategy), the equality of access called out in ‘Harnessing Digital-The Digital Ireland Framework’ and focuses on a long term solution to Ireland’s skills shortage in key areas of economic interest (i.e.ICT, phara, high value manufacturing). By targeting underserved communities, we are fostering diverse TOP TALENT -ensuring that Ireland maintains its thought leadership position in STEM. The STEMp.inc produces Tangible Benefits to Irish society by empowering all of Ireland, including working-class girls, to understand, participate and celebrate STEM. By partnering across Industry and Education we are creating a cohesive eco-system which allows young working-class women see their place in STEM, access pathways to STEM courses and careers, and attain STEM qualifications and mentorship.
