Global food wastage stands at 1.3 billion tonnes annually, with Ireland alone accounting for 753,000 tonnes. This is both an environmental and economic concern. A significant factor in this wastage is misinterpretation of date labels like ‘best before’, ‘sell by’, and ‘use by’ among consumers, particularly impacting Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products. Beyond the food wastage, the prevalent use of non-biodegradable plastic packaging poses a severe environmental threat, with these plastics being a dominant contributor to global waste. This situation is worsened by the under-utilisation of agricultural waste, a potentially valuable resource. Addressing these challenges will lead to environmental benefits, economic gains, and a more sustainable food industry.

BioFreshPack is an innovative, biodegradable food packaging system that integrates a natural freshness indicator. Derived primarily from agricultural waste, this packaging not only promotes environmental sustainability but also offers real-time freshness checks, targeting the issue of premature disposal of Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products. The innovative combination of biodegradable materials and freshness indication distinguishes BioFreshPack from existing solutions. Considering waste as a valuable resource, the solution advances circular economy principles, overcoming limitations of conventional packaging and tackling the challenge of food wastage and its environmental impact.
