Vietnam is constantly among the top three rice exporters in the world. In 2024, the country produced more than 43 million tons of rice, with the Mekong Delta alone contributing around half of that output. However, the country’s millions of rice farmers, most of whom are smallholders, are facing multiple challenges in cultivation, including high Greenhouse Gas emissions, water use constraints, pesticide and nutrient management issues. In addition, Vietnam’s rice farming is increasingly threatened by climate impacts, including saltwater intrusion, unpredictable rainfall, and sea level rise. These challenges lead to soil and ecosystem degradation while squeezing farmers’ profit margins.
The AI for Climate Resilient Rice Farming in Vietnam (AIRRVie) aims to develop a smart digital assistant to support Vietnamese farmers in implementing efficient and sustainable farming practices – optimising crop treatments, protecting the environment, increasing profit margins, and adapting to climate challenges.
