Co-Centres Programme

The Co-Centre Programme, established in 2023, comprises cross-jurisdictional collaboration (Ireland, Great Britain and Northern Ireland) of academic partners working together with industry and other key stakeholders to bring scale, standing and cohesion to the research and innovation ecosystem.

Comprising the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water, and the Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems, the Co-Centres programme is funded over six years, with up to €40 million from Research Ireland (supported by the Department of Further, Higher Education, Research Innovation and Science and the Irish Government’s Shared Island Fund), up to £17 million from Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and up to £12 million through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and is co-funded by industry.

The Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water

The Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water is an international research centre tackling some of the most urgent challenges of our time: climate change, biodiversity loss and water quality decline. The Co-Centre works across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain to research solutions for preventing and living with climate change, protecting and restoring ecosystems, developing sustainable economies and improving quality of life for all.

The Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems

The Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems encompasses a research programme of oriented basic and applied research in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and social sciences across the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain. The Co-Centre presents a unique opportunity to rapidly develop innovative and transformative solutions to transition the food system and position Ireland and the UK as a research and innovation global leader for positive and sustainable change in the transition to climate-neutrality by 2050.
