Research Ireland welcomes €100 million expansion for Tyndall National Institute

Research Ireland has welcomed this week’s government approval for a major expansion of Tyndall National Institute.

The investment of €100 million represents the first major project under INSPIRE, the Government’s €750 million investment package to transform research infrastructure across Ireland’s higher education sector, announced in November 2025 and led by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

Commenting on the investment, Dr Diarmuid O’Brien, CEO of Research Ireland, said:

“On completion, this three-year expansion project at the Tyndall National Institute will significantly boost capacity and competitiveness, advancing Ireland’s position as an international leader in semiconductor research, AI, quantum technologies, and advanced manufacturing. For over two decades, Research Ireland has supported research and innovation at the Tyndall National Institute, including the IPIC Research Ireland Centre for Photonics. This announcement by Minister James Lawless demonstrates a commitment to strengthening Ireland’s research infrastructure at an unprecedented scale.”
